Funciona simultáneamente como una unidad de apoyo a la gestión institucional y como un espacio de investigación histórica y preservación documental, por lo que se organiza en dos áreas: Gestión de Documentos y de Investigación Histórica.

El Archivo General de la Universidad de la República (AGU) es un servicio central con cometidos académicos y administrativos. Funciona simultáneamente como una unidad de apoyo a la gestión institucional y como un espacio de investigación histórica y preservación documental, por lo que se organiza en dos áreas: Gestión de Documentos y de Investigación Histórica.
Fue fundado en 2002 en base al trabajo de la Comisión de Selección Documental. Desde entonces, su misión principal es garantizar la organización, tratamiento y servicio del patrimonio documental de la Udelar. Otros de sus cometidos son proponer a las autoridades las bases de la política archivística de la institución, ofrecer asesoramiento y supervisión archivística a las unidades administrativas y académicas que lo requieran y actuar como repositorio de práctica para estudiantes de la Escuela Universitaria de Bibliotecología y Ciencias Afines.

Public areas (ISDIAH 5.5.3): "Record information about spaces available for public use, permanent or temporary exhibitions, free or charged internet connection, cash machines, cafeterias, restaurants, shops, etc)."
